Coyotes. The furry foragers most often associated with wind-swept prairies and lonely woodlands are rare but not unheard of in Manhattan, according to Adrian Benepe, New York City parks commissioner . Most recently, a frightened witness called 911 in the early morning hours of Sunday to report seeing something that looked like a coyote on Columbia University's Morningside campus. Officers responded and confirmed that it was, indeed, a coyote. Students were sent an e-mail Sunday afternoon reporting that "three animals identified as coyotes" were on Columbia's campus. • Guide dog puppy VOLUNTEERS are being sought to look after puppies before they go into training to become guide dogs. The Guide Dog charity has launched a drive for helpers to care for the pups until they are between 12 and 15 months old. Supporters are also needed to help fundraise at the charity’s branches and to assist with street collections and organising money-raising events. Last Friday the charity hosted an open day at St Peter’s College in New Inn Hall Street, Oxford, to recruit potential helpers. Young guide dogs were also taken around the city centre to train them in negotiating shops, kerbs and public transport. The charity has bred and trained guide dogs for more than 75 years, and provides dogs to blind and partially-sighted people of all ages. Re ...

  • Endangered Mexican Wolves Opinion: The article on Saturday "Mexican wolf count drops by 10" is alarming. Obviously, the reintroduction program to return the wolf to the Arizona environment where it rightfully belongs is not working. Some blame the wolf for the loss of livestock despite the fact that wolves are responsible for less than 1 percent of cattle deaths in Arizona. The Mexican wolf is headed for extinction, accelerated by killing by humans, whether unfairly blaming the wolf for cattle loss or because they simply hate wolves. In doing so, humans forget that wolves are the wild cousin of dogs and an amazing example of animal society that should inspire all of us. Wolves have strong family ties and naturally hunt native prey. The Mexican wolf is part of t ...
  • "Cutting One Out" - a painting by Todd Fredericksen of the Crystal Creek wolf pack hunting elk in the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone National Park. DENVER (AP) - Biologists working with the owner of a western Colorado ranch are trying to determine if a pack of wolves has settled there. Biologists consulting for the High Lonesome Ranch north of DeBeque, about 200 miles west of Denver, say they have seen signs of wolves. They sent animal droppings for DNA tests to the University of California-Los Angeles. Colorado Division of Wildlife spokesman Randy Hampton says state officials are talking to the ranch, which offers hunting and fishing excursions, about the reports of wolves. Federal officials say they haven't seen evidence yet of a pack taking up residence. Wolves were er ...
